My suggestion is to mirror real-life F1 and require each driver to use 2 different tyre compounds during a race. In all my seasons racing in multiple leagues/levels, I have yet to see a successful multi-tyre strategy, because of the common knowledge of which tyre is best (used to be Hards, now it's Softs).
If teams were required to use 2 different compounds during the race
- It would make qualifying and starting the race on Supersofts viable.
- It would add an element to strategy, forcing players to leave their comfort zone where they only use the one compound they know is good.
- It would allow the players to provide feedback on the current states of each tyre compound. This is especially important because of the tyre changes that are coming out more frequently nowadays, as most people don't touch the medium and hard compounds, so they can't provide feedback on any changes made to those tyres.
- Overall, it would open up the game to new metas. Even if within the first few races people figure out the "ideal" strategy, for example: 2 Soft stints and 1 Medium stint, at least people would complete the Medium stint at different points in the race.
I think this feature would be best used as an option for the league owner, so they can choose whether or not to implement 2 tyre compounds or not for their league. I've seen some leagues put this as a rule, but there is nothing currently forcing players to abide by it.
Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think.
Cheers.
