Why?

It's not really a lottery, but, if you insist on naming it as such, I think you should take in account it's one-lap qualifying.

How is it not a lottery?

lottery = everyone can get the pole.

It seems to me as much of a lottery as it is in real life - which means it's not really a lottery, possibly only when it's wet.

My average qualifying position was in the 20s in my first races and now it is around 15, which is pretty normal for an improving car/driver combination. I had one excess in a wet qualifying where I was P3, but then I had a dissappointment a few races later with another wet quali where I had P20. But other than that, it's not a lottery at all.

In my league (iGP Europe League), it's usually the same person taking pole position. So (in the dry at least) I think talent affects qualifying most because the drivers who are always on pole in my league have very high talent.

Both my drivers have very high talent (17) and my car development is higher than everyone else.  I have never qualified higher than 6th which isn't typical and 2 drivers who I know are less experienced with lower talents and less developed cars routinely qualify in the top 4.  So I'm not sure what is making the difference.

Higher speed rating for said drivers would be my guess.

There is a growing feeling that drivers have attributes we cannot see & one of these is a quailfying performance level. Some drivers are just better at qualifying than others, as in real F1

Then no offense, but the the talent should be hidden until the driver has spent suffient time (3 races? 5 races? half a season?) with a team for that team to "see" the talent (ie. how quickly/well they are training, or perhaps not all skills should go to 20 for every driver; a lower talent driver has certain attributes capped at a random number less than 20). Then when that driver is released, then the talent is visible to everyone, but only for so many days (2?) after release, then because the driver has not been "racing" the skill gets hidden again. Or if that is a programming nightmare, then leave the talent visible

The "hidden" qual talent should be visible just as all the others are. If we know a driver is good at fast corners, weak in the wet, and their concentration is ok, then there is obviously a rough scouting report. Rough enough to know if they are decent qualifiers.

Lets not have the driver market become a lottery as well please. My current drivers are now my fourth set of drivers and will probably be my last set of drivers for quite some time cause I knew what I was looking for. Drivers that are better stand out more on real life as well so obviously they would have more talent but that's not the ultimate factor in defining how good the driver will be. They have to be fit so health and stamina are big factors cause it will determine how fast your driver is the longer the race is, especially when doing 100% races.

There are plenty other factors, talent isn't everything, a talent 20 driver isn't garunteed to win all the races if his health is utter garbage and doesn't know how to defend.

Andrew wouldn't confirm or not confirm the existence of hidden attributes.

Sometimes Attributes can have a negative effect on other attributes assumingly aswell.

Both of which are plausible explanations.

ours its been random....the fastest guy almost always wins...but he never gets the pole so ya i seem to think along the lottery deal

I think there are multiple factors that affect qualifying. I am yet to see it as a lottery in my league. But basically with qualifying there appear to be 4 things that make the real difference regarding where you qualify. First of all tires, Softs will out qualify hards, baring the situation being rookie vs experienced driver/team. Secondly fuel load, the shorter your first stint the more likely you are to be at the front of the grid. Thirdly the drivers aggression, it appears to affect how fast the tires come up to a good operating temperature, and from my experience has direct results not only to grid position but how fast the driver enters and exits the pits, and gets up to speed. Lastly the level you ask your driver to race at appears to affect your qualifying result, say take it easy, and viola he will take it easy and not qualify as well as if you told him to take big risks.

We all know factors such as talent, and design levels also affect things, but what I have outlined above appears to be very defining factors in the end result of qualifying.

I'm also going to point out a few more things aswell.
[list]
[*]Traffic exists in qualifying. You can lose time trying to pass a car on a flying lap.
[*]Weather can change during qualification, so when cars leave the garage and start and finish their laptime, there is easily a weather change.
[*]Driver mistakes exist in this game, many have seen these in practice lap setups.
[*]Car performance and component wear effects qualification
[*]Car setup also effects qualification. It is possible to optimize a qualification setup but is terrible to handle at heavy fuels.
[*]It is possible that the Technical Director plays a part in the Qualifying.

Chris, All the cars qualify with enough fuel for 1 lap and at 5/5 push level.

David, Each car has the track to itself.

Hummm. Are you sure about this ???

I checked something straight after lockdown and the qually was done and dusted within a min or 2..

As soon as the league locks for qually. Go to spectate through the main tabs and don't wait for the results to come up..

It's a hidden back door that I found and you can get in to your room before you should..

9.20 was lockdown, I was in at 9.21 and the cars was already lined up on the grid... It's just a program and bang, it's done.

Try it. I might be wrong... but I was in the room within 2 mins of the lockdown and Ethan didn't have the results up, yet I was in the 2D already. :)

The room locks at 9.20pm with the race starting at 9.30pm

Not yet bud, that would be influenced by design progression in the new update. Drivers have their own tracks which is what  you probably mean't.

Qually is done as fast as practice laps are done. It's been quickened into a more instaneous session, and it takes a while to come onto the live site cause of a loading system which is required to not strain the server, assumingly.
