I was at Belgium and was racing on soft tires. I then swapped to super soft but even after 5 or so laps, the lap times were still slower than the soft. I maintained the tyre temp at optimal but this still happened. I’m quite a noob can someone explain what is happening here?

Belgium has insanely high tire wear. Normally SS tires only last about 3-4 laps without losing performance (from my experience). I would guess that you possibly went far to long on your ss stint, and ended up losing a lot of time compared to your competitors.

Oh is that so? Umm could any experienced players provide me with a rough estimate of how many laps a S and SS tire would last in optimum performance for each track?

Tyre life and performance depends on the circuit, the race length, number of design points you have in your Tyre Economy attribute, Push Level (so ambient temperature is important) and compound. Also, whether you are in a refuelling allowed or no refuelling league will determine how far you can push a tyre.

Recently the wear/performance curve was updated and you can find information about this here... Tyre 'Cliffs' Update (16th August @ 12:00)

Unfortunately, without knowing all of the variables there is no simple answer to your question.

Your practice laps will give you an APPROXIMATE wear rate at PL3 for your current Tyre Economy design, so set a practice lap on each of the compounds and use these values to determine how many laps you can run before each compound "falls off the cliff".

If there are experienced Elite managers in your league take a look at what strategy they used in previous races at the same circuit. During your learning phase of the game, copying winning strategies from experienced Elite managers will serve you well. As you gain experience (making copious notes is advisable) and better understand how the tyres perform you can start to tweak things and decide your own strategies.
