Yay, 15 reseach points. But I also no longer have the strongest car. Post race email says
"Research brought an extra 15 points of performance to our car. 'Carpers Racing' appear to have the most developed car. Research gains: Fuel economy +15"
So did Carpers receive any research points?

It was unrelated to who had the strongest car, and I tested what the outcomes of your next race would be. So I knew you'd get 15.

You'll be pleased to know I'm looking into this now. :)

Tuomo raises a valid point, in that the research power value might be misleading if you select an area where you are already on top. I'm not sure what the best solution to that would be.

Even if I have the best handling for example, it could theoretically still be improved from researching other teams. That's why it didn't make any sense to me to get 0 points.
I think it should be split into two;
You get some points in the areas you are behind always and the other half you can decide by research. Which wouldn't be just spying anyway, but internal research.
Also chief designers "fetishes" should be accounted at some point here. Maybe split them in two and make CD's output fixed.

We have to do something so there can be specialized cars that excell on mickey mouse circuits and others in high speed corners and straights.

Maybe i am missing the obvious here, but how can you research teams with less well developed items and then expect an increase in your more developed item??

I disagree, this splitting thing is a bad suggestion.
